Andrew Janian: We live and breathe this partnership every day

I am Citadel’s Head of Equities Engineering. In this role, I am responsible for frameworks and data solutions that serve Citadel’s Global Equities, Surveyor, Ashler, and International Equities businesses. I also lead Cloud and Platform Engineering, as well as Core Engineering, which together provide many of the firm's foundational technologies.

Michael Watson: Text data is probably one of the easiest to start training AI with

As a Director of Field Application Engineering for Supermicro, I manage East Coast Field Engineering, Solutions & Technology Enablement teams responsible for understanding large enterprise, Cloud GPU/AI, and service provider customer requirements for deployment of optimized solutions to meet customer needs. I travel often to drive strategic partner initiatives, customer satisfaction, and lead technology & roadmap discussions with leaders of organizations and strategic customers.

Dr Kjell Carlsson: Data is the largest untapped resource available to firms today

Both in my current role, and when I was an industry analyst at Forrester Research, I advise companies on building their AI and ML capabilities and driving impact at scale using these technologies. I also host the Data Science Leaders podcast where I interview executives and other thought leaders on AI best practices, trends, and key topics, such as GenAI and Responsible AI.

Petter Kolm: The holy grail is to use the data you have in novel ways

Petter Kolm is a Professor at NYU Courant. In 2021, he received the "Quant of the Year" award from Portfolio Management Research (PMR) and the Journal of Portfolio Management (JPM) for his significant contributions to the field of quantitative portfolio theory. As a consultant and expert witness, Petter offers his expertise in areas such as machine learning, portfolio management, risk management, and trading. He has co-authored numerous articles and books on quantitative finance and financial data science.

Samuel Mugel: Data abundance will continue to be an opportunity and a challenge

Data abundance will continue to be an opportunity and a challenge. This trend will only increase now that we have powerful tools for generating content. What’s more, synthetically generated data will tend to reinforce the patterns that generated it in training new models, making realistic training and the prevention of hallucinations more complex. This is where you really need advanced techniques like Tensor Networks to eliminate redundancy and improve model performance. This also massively reduces training costs, which are set to become prohibitively expensive by 2026.

Judith Gu: The source of alpha is stock’s idiosyncratic risk or market dislocation

I run quant equities for both the US and Canada at Scotiabank. Our small and efficient team built a highly robust and fully automated systematic market-making, real-time risk management system within a very short timeframe through leveraging the best real-time technologies and time-proven risk management data/models. The system is serving on-demand liquidity requirements for North America clients with pricing transparency and operational efficiency.

Iro Tasitsiomi: One of the biggest challenges will be around Generative AI and its adoption

I am the Head of Investments Data Science at T. Rowe Price, an active asset manager with over a trillion in assets under management. I joined a couple of years ago after spending time in passive asset management (BlackRock) as well as the sell side (Goldman Sachs), and the world of fintech start-ups.

Michael Oliver Weinberg: Gen.AI will both seismically change the landscape and automate the boring stuff

Gen.Ai will both seismically change the landscape and automate the ‘boring stuff.’ As we just discussed, our forecast for how it may impact PE investing includes both aspects. Ranging from revolutionizing the entire investment process via automation and data to automating the boring stuff, i.e. prepping for meetings, writing contracts, writing sourcing emails, and monitoring KPIs.

Low Inflation, High Inflation, and a bit of Recession

By: Andrew Samu

In 1979, Paul Volcker was named Fed chairman by President Jimmy Carter. Following his appointment, the Fed raised rates to over 20% in order to stem inflation. It led to a lot of disgruntlement at the time. But there are clear parallels with the problems that the U.S. economy is facing today.

Deciphering Chat GPT: a gate to augment financial intelligence

By: Alejandra Litterio

Behaviourally, cognitively, reversible, mutually exclusive are some of the properties of “a questions game”. In a word, confusing, unless we know the nature of the source of the answer. Having said that, speculations, and curiosity about the limits of Chat GPT, conducted the sceptical to running all sorts of tests to check how well it performs with logico-mathematical, sematic, and ethical requests forgetting that it is not what is achieved but how it is achieved that matters. This how are the queries, to me semantic well-worded questions, which -by definition- require understanding and experience from both the meaning and the context.

Up, down and all around: the future of quant and cryptocurrency

By: Sarah Monaghan
11/09/2022

If there is one certainty about cryptocurrencies, it’s their volatility.

Yet despite the industry being in its infancy and still evolving, interest in crypto as an asset class remains high.

The fact that it is now under such regulatory scrutiny indicates that its acceptance is growing. Lawmakers in the US and elsewhere in the world are currently pushing for better laws and guidelines to make cryptocurrency safer for investors. More regulation is likely to mean more stability and to encourage greater confidence.

The ‘mind-reading’ powers of NLP (natural language processing) is proving to be a valuable addition to the strategic toolkit of the quant investment industry. NLP in its most basic form is a way for a computer to understand human language. But it now goes far beyond that into sentiment analysis, enabling firms to determine the emotional value of communications.

Quant investing post-pandemic: the state of play

By: Sarah Monaghan
04/04/2022

Is the pandemic-induced ‘quant winter’ over for the investment industry? Many hedge fund managers now seem to believe a ‘quant spring’ has returned … Quantitative investing, or systematic investing, encompasses a big variety of styles, markets and philosophies. But most involve adopting investment strategies that analyse historical quantitative data. But, however good that data, it’s impossible to predict the future. Which is why the last two pandemic-ridden years have been described as a ‘quant winter’ (or as Man Institute put it: ‘a mid-life crisis’) for many fund managers.

The changing impact of US financial regulations

03/03/2022

US markets flourished in 2021, buoyed by a strong economy that kept corporate profit growth, a major driver of stock price activity, moving in an upward direction. The barometer, the S&P 500, the measure of large US stock performance, gained an impressive 28.7%, with other parts of the market performing well too. Roll in 2022, and it’s a different picture in Democratic President Joe Biden’s US. The Financial Times reported in February: “The US stock market has suffered its worst start to the year since the global financial crisis, as the threat of rising interest rates, slowing corporate earnings growth and geopolitical tensions sent stocks tumbling across the board.”

The expanding role of AI in hedge fund management

By: Sarah Monaghan
02/23/2022

Today, hedge funds can – and do – base their investing strategies on the models and tools constructed by AI. There are already many examples of such models using AI as a helpful tool to improve investment intelligence that are outperforming more traditional investment methods. Perhaps the most well-known is Renaissance Technologies, one of the world's largest quant managers. The fund, with $165 billion in AUM, was launched in 1982. It has transformed its strategy through its use of AI, often eschewing recruitment of typical Wall Street types with financial backgrounds in favour of pure data scientists.
